Everyone’s skin seems to have been suffering lately. It seems all that snow/rain/bloody cold wind has taken its toll on our faces and bodies – which sounds like a bloody good excuse for some pampering to me!
I’m very lucky with my skin on the whole: apart from some keratosis pilaris on the backs on my arms (which seems to be getting better with age, thankfully!) and the odd spot, my skin seems to be content to do it’s own low-maintenance thing. But after the recent cold snap, I’ve noticed some dry patches on my face and hands, and some seriously chapped lips (although that could be all the trumpet playing…); my skin seems to be asking for a bit more moisture. So I thought it would be fun to put together a post with a few suggestions for restoring that glow to any skin which is looking a lil sad at this chilly time of year.
So without further ado, here’s a big ole’ list of all those beauty products that save my skin (pun intended) on a regular basis, along with a few newcomers to my current routine:
1. Cupcake Mask – Lush
This lil beaut has been a lifesaver the past week. I picked it up in Lush last Sunday (finally saved up enough empty pots for my free mask y’all!) and OH MY GOSH, it smells so good. It smells like a chocolate milkshake, its ingredients include cocoa butter and mint oils, and you even keep it in the fridge. If you can resist the urge to eat it long enough to put it on your face, it gives your skin a real hydration boost without any oily residue. I recommend being thorough with washing it off though, and a good swish of toner afterwards – which leads me nicely to the next item on the list…
2. Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution – The Ordinary.
This superstar toner seems to be currently sold out in most places (boo!), but is definitely worth the wait. If you haven’t heard of this brand before: prepare to be obsessed! The Ordinary is a skincare brand that focuses on ‘advanced functional beauty’ – they use plain packaging and simple branding to keep prices low, without compromising on the quality of their products (sounds almost too good to be true, right?). Most of their skincare is vegan, and all is vegetarian, and they also don’t trade in mainland China due to their animal testing requirements – which just makes me love the brand even more! I have quite a few products from their range, but I think this toner is my favourite – I snapped this baby up a couple of months ago from ASOS for the bargain price of £6.80, if you can believe it! It’s great for gentle exfoliation, but it’s also really soothing thanks to the aloe vera and ginseng and really makes your skin glow afterwards – definitely something my skin needs in this weather!
3. Mega Greens Galaxy & Moisturizing Moon Mask Duo – Glossier
There HAD to be some Glossier on this list, and these two masks are potentially my favourite beauty products ever. Designed to be used together, the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack detoxifies and then the Moisturizing Moon Mask soothes and hydrates – oh, and they also smell a bit like suncream in the best possible way. The whole process takes 40 minutes (20 minutes for each mask) but is so worth it – they leave your skin baby soft and rosy, especially if you then cleanse with a bit o’ the Milky Jelly Cleanser afterwards. Really great for an hour or so in the bath with a cheeky gin and a podcast or two to catch up on – just what you need after a long day during these arctic weather conditions!
4. Honey Lip Balm – Burt’s Bees
This is one of those products you rebuy over and over – and if you’re anything like me, even keep spares of just in case you lose one in your handbag! This lip balm does exactly what it says on the pot; it’s nourishing, moisturising and exactly what my dry, chapped lips need. I usually apply it at the same time as I moisturise my face, letting it soak whilst I do the rest of my makeup and before I apply any lipstick or gloss. It’s also great to apply a little right before bed, again it’s easier to remember if you do it at the same time as you moisturise your face.
5. Balm Dot Com – Glossier
This last one has already reached cult beauty status, but I couldn’t not add it to this list when it’s just so perfect for this time of year. Sticking to the theme of soothing dry skin, the original Balm Dot Com is perfect for slathering on any part of your body that feels like it needs a moisture boost. My current routine is to dab this on any dry patches on my face before applying my primer (my current fave is another Glossier hun, the Priming Moisturizer). Gah, this stuff is just so good; and don’t be put of by the size of the tube either, a little of this product goes a long way! I currently also have my eye on the Rose and Birthday, which have a rosy tint and a subtle shimmer respectively – perfect for dry lips that need lil bit of love.
And there you have it, my must-have skin products to see you through the current blizzard. Do you have any essentials to keep your skin happy at this time of year? Let me know – I’d love to hear from you!
